About This Place

Nestled within the charming walls of the Old School House on Coxgreen Road, Old School House Kitchen Coxgreen is a delightful coffee shop and brunch destination that perfectly blends warm, nostalgic surroundings with an outstanding menu of comfort foods and freshly crafted beverages. Whether you're seeking a hearty breakfast, a leisurely brunch, or a satisfying cake treat, this inviting eatery offers an array of flavors that dance on the palate and warm the soul.

The culinary experience here is anchored by classic British favorites with a twist of homemade charm. Diners rave about their hearty Chicken Tarragon and Grape sandwich on seeded bloomer, which boasts tender chicken infused with aromatic tarragon and the sweet burst of grapes, served alongside crunchy kettle crisps and refreshing coleslaw. If you're in the mood for something indulgent yet comforting, the variety of savory pies—like the rich Steak & Ale or deeply satisfying Thick Cut Corned Beef and Leek pie—come served with mushy peas and a pot of thick, velvety gravy that invites you to savor every bite.

Morning visitors won’t want to miss the Big Bacon Bun, specially made to keep even an eight-year-old fueled and happy, paired wonderfully with a frothy cappuccino or a bold, sharp espresso that wakes the senses. For those with a sweet tooth, the Lemon Drizzle Cheesecake and the homely Apple Crumble with Pouring Cream offer luscious, tangy, and comforting dessert experiences that guests like Simon Farrell and Bethan Rose have praised to perfection. Their hot chocolate and iced coffees are equally praised, elevating any coffee break to a moment of pure indulgence.

The Old School House Kitchen isn’t just about fantastic food—it’s about the experience. The honest warmth of the staff and the inviting atmosphere steeped in local history create a cozy retreat. Guests appreciate the friendly service that feels genuinely attentive without the slightest hint of pretension, making it a sanctuary whether you’re stopping in for a quick latte or settling down for a Sunday lunch, as Kathryn Forte has celebrated for its incredible value and delicious fare.

Several visitors mention discovering this gem by chance and being delighted by the quality and variety on offer. From hearty pub-style meals to lighter farmhouse sandwiches, every dish is crafted with care and a genuine love for good food. Gilda Dyson’s account of enjoying a fabulous Christmas lunch here for less than £20 per person highlights not only the culinary skill but also the remarkable devotion to value and customer satisfaction.

Summing up, Old School House Kitchen Coxgreen is more than just a coffee or brunch spot—it’s a community haven where local history meets modern comfort food. Whether lingering over a perfectly brewed espresso, indulging in a melt-in-the-mouth pie, or sharing slice after slice of scrumptious cakes, you leave feeling nourished in body and spirit, eager to return again and again.

First time visiting today, beautiful location and delicious food. We ordered a beef brisket sandwich and corn beef pie with a side of fries. The brisket beef was lovely, soft and flavoursome. Also had a caramel iced latte and banana milkshake, both great! Will definitely be returning as the menu had plenty of choice, and the cakes also looked yummy. Friendly service

First visit today and thoroughly enjoyed it. We walked along from South Hylton expecting sandwiches and light bites and were over the moon that they were serving Sunday Lunch. Incredible value for money, will definitely be going back. Lovely food and great service.

A small, out of the way location, but well worth the trip. First rate customer service and exceptionally good food, all in a first class location. Highly recommended. Update on sunny day in May. Another visit to this wonderful place, lemon drizzle cake special this time. Perfection. Nice to be back here, food excellent as always. First class customer service, all in a perfect location.

We stumbled across The Old School House Kitchen after a Sunday morning stroll, what a lovely find! The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and steeped in history, making it a perfect spot to relax. We had chicken burgers and carrot cake, both of which were absolutely delicious. The staff were friendly and attentive, adding to the charm of the place. The only small downside was that the flat whites we ordered were served lukewarm, but this didn’t put us off from returning. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely be back again! Highly recommended for anyone looking for a cozy and characterful spot with great food.

My husband and I visited with our daughter and dog. The man who served us couldn't have been nicer, when he realised we had a dog with us, he got her a sausage free of charge. He was very friendly and the food was lovely. Will definitely return.
